Luckenbach Presents Max Stalling & The McKay Brothers
Luckenbach Presents Max Stalling & The McKay Brothers!

Dallas-based American singer-songwriter Max Stalling never expected to be a full-time country and western musician. After earning his college degree from Texas A&M in food science, he worked for Rainbo Bread and Frito Lay. But following the critically lauded and audience-proven successes of his first three CDs, Comfort In The Curves in 1997, Wide Afternoon in 2000, and One Of The Ways in 2002, he traded his lab coat for cowboy boots and has been touring ever since - performing at more than 150 honky tonks and smoky dancehalls each year. In 2006 he issued the live disc Sell Out (recorded at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton), and his first new studio album in five years, Topaz City, was released in the summer of 2007.

You will not want to miss the opportunity to see one of our most anticipated shows of the season.
Tom Browning, Mark Haworth and Oreland Joe will each present 10 new works that will highlight their unique vision of the subject matter they hold near and dear to their hearts.
Tom Browning's backlit horses and riders, Mark Haworth's Big Bend landscapes and the one of a kind stone work of Native Americans rendered by Oreland Joe will come together to encompass the very essence of western art.
All three men have been working toward the show for a year and the paintings and stone sculptures that will be on display will surely evoke as much passion in the viewer as these men have put into their masterful works of art.

Friday Night Dance w/Rosie Flores
Rosie Flores performs at The Friday Night Dance, at Luckenbach Texas. Y'all come out and listen to great music, in a great atmosphere, with great friends at the Luckenbach Dance Hall.

Rosie Flores was born in San Antonio, TX and raised in Southern California, Rosie Flores' music blends the best of honky tonk, rockabilly, and jazz with the traditional sounds of her Tex-Mex heritage. Since the late 70s, she has been an important figure in the Los Angeles, Austin, TX and Nashville music scenes.

Rosie's reputation as a high octane rockabilly star is well established. Critical raves from prestigious publications such as the Los Angeles Times and Guitar Player magazine leave no doubt about her talent for filling dance floors and lighting up rooms with her blazing guitar solos.

Rosie's solos recordings have found homes on both the Billboard and Gavin charts and are also featured in seven motion pictures. Her revved-up performances in honky-tonks from Boston to Bakersfield have won legions of fans and earned appearances on such nationally broadcast television programs as "Austin City Limits" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brian." Early in her career while recording for Warner Bros. Records she was nominated for best "Horizon Artist" by the Academy of Country Music in California. In the year 2000 she won the presitgious LA Weekly Music Award for Best Rockabilly Swing Artist.

Live Music & Fine Dining Featuring "MITCH WEBB AND THE SWINDLES"
Mitch Webb is a songwriter straight from the roots music melting pot of San Antonio. His band is continually compared to Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet and rightfully so considering that Webb hails from the same hometown and plays a special blend of country, rock-n-roll and Conjunto found only in their region.

The Swindles consist of some of the finest musicians the Alamo city has to offer. Mitch Webb plays guitar and sings and is joined by Grammy award winner Joe Reyes on guitar and vocals (Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez, Texas Tornados), Ed Gough on drums, Dave Wasson on guitar, Odie on bass, Michael Guerra on accordion (Raul Malo.) Their last studio album “The Lonely Kind” was produced by Ronnie Morales (Texas Tornados, Flaco Jimenez, Selena..) and did very well on the radio spending 9 weeks in the Americana Music Associations Top 40 chart and also landing in the top 10 of the FAR chart. With 5 cd’s under there belt and years of touring the US and Europe, you can be guaranteed to witness a performance with the raw power of a band that has seen it all and lived to tell about it.

Luckenbach Presents Billy Joe Shaver
Luckenbach Presents Billy Joe Shaver!

Billy Joe Shaver is an American country music singer/songwriter. He was born August 16, 1939 in Corsicana, Texas. Shaver's 1973 album Old Five and Dimers Like Me is a classic in the outlaw country genre.

Shaver was raised by his mother, Victory Watson Shaver, after his father Virgil left the family before he was born. Until he was 12, he spent a great deal of time with his grandmother in Waco, Texas so that his mother could work. He sometimes accompanied his mother to her job at a local nightclub, where he began to be exposed to country music.[1]

Shaver's mother remarried about the time that his grandmother died, so he and his older sister Patricia moved in with their mother and new stepfather. Shaver left school after the eighth grade to help his uncles pick cotton, but occasionally returned to school to play sports.[2]

Shaver joined the U.S. Navy on his seventeenth birthday. Upon his discharge, he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo cowboy. About this time, Shaver met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times.[3]

Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day his right hand (his dominant hand) became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without those missing fingers.[4]

Shaver decided that life was too short to do something he didn't enjoy, so he set out one day to hitchhike to L.A.. He couldn't get a ride west, and ended up accompanying a man who dropped him off just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. The next ride brought him to Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50/week.[5] His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver's songs. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver's music. This led to his own record deal.

Unfortunately for Shaver, the first few recording companies he signed with soon folded.[6] He was never able to gain widespread recognition as a singer, although he never stopped recording his own music.

After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on December 31, 2000. Shaver nearly died himself the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. After successful heart surgery, Billy Joe came back to release a new album entited "Freedom's Child" in 2002.

Billy Joe Shaver is known for his hit "Live Forever" performed by The Highwaymen. He also wrote numerous songs for artists such as Patty Loveless and Willie Nelson. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.[7]

In 1999, Shaver was invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. In November of 2005, Billy Joe Shaver performed on the CMT Outlaws 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. He currently lives in Waco, Texas.

In 1996, Shaver took a part in the movie The Apostle, playing opposite Robert Duvall. He had additional speaking roles in the Duvall film Secondhand Lions (2003) and in The Wendell Baker Story (2005).

Police in Lorena, TX about 10 miles south of Waco, issued arrest warrants for Shaver April 2, 2007 on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place. This was in connection with an incident outside a tavern, Papa Joe's Texas Saloon in Lorena on March 31, 2007, in which Shaver shot a man, Billy Bryant Coker, in the face with a handgun. Coker's injuries were reported as not life-threatening.

Witnesses interviewed by police report hearing Shaver saying "where do you want it?" and then, after the shot was fired, "Tell me you are sorry" and "No one tells me to shut up." Coker told police the attack was unprovoked. Shaver's attorney declared that Shaver had shot Coker "in self-defense" after Coker threatened Shaver with a knife.[4]

After unsuccessfully attempting to surrender to police in Austin, TX, who were unaware of the warrant, Shaver turned himself in at McLennan County Jail in Waco, TX on Tuesday, April 3. He was released after an hour on $50,000 bond and gave his scheduled performance at Waterloo Records in Austin that evening,[5][6] where he reportedly told fans, "Don't forget to pray for me, and tell your kids to pray for me, too."

In 2004, a documentary of his life, A Portrait of Billy Joe was released. The documentary was directed by Luciana Pedraza.

Quotations
"If you don't love Jesus, you can go to hell."
"May the God of your choice bless you." (Lent to his friend Kinky Friedman for his gubernatorial campaign)

Luckenbach Presents Asleep at the Wheel | Bri Bagwell
Luckenbach Presents Asleep at the Wheel | Bri Bagwell!

Asleep at the Wheel has seen miles and miles of Texas. They got their kicks on Route 66. And, in 2010, the band clicked another milestone on the odometer – their 40th anniversary. Now in their 41st year, the band continues to introduce the western swing genre to a new generation on tour and takes audiences on the ride of a lifetime with their play, “A Ride with Bob.”

“It’s been an amazing ride. From Paw Paw, West Virginia to San Francisco to Austin, we’ve seen it all,” says Wheel front man Ray Benson. “But, rest assured, there is still so many exciting projects in the works. The Wheel keeps rolling!”

The Wheel Gets Rolling
“there's some relatively unknown group around that I really dig.
Asleep at the Wheel plays great country music.” - Van Morrison Rolling Stone Interview (1973)

It all started when Ray Benson, Floyd Domino, and Lucky Oceans, along with a Vermont farm boy named Leroy Preston; Virginian Chris O'Connell; and Gene Dobkin, a bass player and fellow classmate of Benson's from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, joined forces. They began with a simple goal: to play and help revive American roots music.

Asleep at the Wheel landed a gig opening for Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna in Washington, DC in 1970. At the height of Vietnam, many Americans were using their choice of music to express their stance on the conflict in southeast Asia. “We wanted to break that mold,” said Benson. “We were concerned more with this amazing roots music, which we felt was being lost amid the politics. We were too country for the rock folks and we were too long-haired for the country folks. But everybody got over it once the music started playing.”

A year later, they were coaxed into moving to California by Commander Cody, leader of Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. But, the band’s big break came when Van Morrison mentioned them in an interview with Rolling Stone. The record offers started coming in and The Wheel got rolling.

80+ But Who’s Counting?
"We're a dance band. That's what we're about. And that's plenty." - Ray Benson

The musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. Reuter’s pegged The Wheel as “one of the best live acts in the business.” Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book, the band has constantly toured at a national level throughout its history; with anywhere from 7-15 of the finest players Ray Benson could talk into jumping in the bus to play a string of dates. The alumni roster is well over 80+ members, and includes an impressive list of musicians who have gone on to perform with artists such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, and many more. A quick scan of awards, such as “Touring Band of the Year” (CMAs, 1976) and “Lifetime Achievement in Performance” (Americana Music Awards 2009), not to mention near dominance of the GRAMMY “Country Instrumental” category over the years, reflects the reputation of the band’s musicianship. Ray Benson fell in love with western swing because of its unique combination of elements of American blues, swing and traditional fiddling but also for its demanding musical chops. Western swing is what Benson calls “jazz with a cowboy hat,” is a thrill to hear live, and thanks in large part to the Wheel’s 40 years of promotion, is a living and creative genre of music today.

On the Records
“Everything this act has ever released is simply spectacular.” - Billboard Magazine (2010)

Over their history, Asleep at The Wheel has garnered nine GRAMMY Awards and released more than 25 studio and live albums, and there is no sign of slowing down any time soon. Just last year they earned a Grammy nomination in the newly minted Best Americana Album category for their critically acclaimed Willie & The Wheel, on Bismeaux Records. Most recently, another collaborative project paired the band with the legendary lead from Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, Leon Rausch. The distinguished velvety vocals that voiced the King of western swing partnered with “post-modern kings of Texas Swing” on It’s A Good Day, which USA Today called, “swing from the heavens.” It was Leon who first suggested to Ray in the 1970’s that The Wheel record Get Your Kicks (on Route 66). The Wheel has now recorded the hit 4 times in 4 different decades, with this latest version featuring Leon.

The Play is The Thing
“The most entertaining night in Texas.” - Liz Smith (New York Post)

The Broadway-scale musical that started as a commemoration of Bob Will’s 100th birthday in 2005 now marks its own milestone in 2010; 5 years. Ray Benson and Ann Rapp co-wrote the first-ever musical drama about Benson’s idol, entitled “A Ride with Bob: The Bob Wills Musical.” At the core of the story is the conversation Ray intended to have when he was invited to meet with Wills in 1974, fresh off the Wheel’s release of “Take Me Back to Tulsa.” Unfortunately, that meeting never happened as Mr. Wills took ill and never recovered. For the last five years, the play has presented an inspired look into the life, loves and music of the colorful Bob Wills in performances across Texas and from San Francisco to Washington DC. Immediately embraced by western swing fans, this unique presentation has achieved cult-status amongst fans who can’t get enough. This year “A Ride with Bob” continued its tour with performances in Abilene, Richardson and in Austin, September 17 and 18 at the Long Center.

True to Asleep at the Wheel’s original vision, the play isn’t just appealing to core fans. A 2007 interview with The New York Times noted, “the play had another advantage. ‘We were reaching a completely new audience,’ Mr. Benson said — theatergoers who might never set foot in a beer joint, or even in a cowboy boot.”

From Dance Halls to Concert Halls
“A Swinging Symphony” - Fort Worth Star Telegram

Any band that spends upwards of 250 days on the road each year is more than likely to have seen its fair share of dives, gin joints, biker bars, clubs, auditoriums, dance halls and the like. The Wheel is no exception. Another place Wheel fans have more recently discovered the music has been in symphony halls. Originally debuted in collaboration with the Austin Symphony, the Wheel has since gone on to present their pops program in select performances across the country, and even released a CD in 2006 of their performance with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

Throughout their four decades the Wheel has driven the genre to the edge, explored new territories, picked up new passengers along the way and crisscrossed the country to the delight of fans and critics alike. And, even though they’re doing “forty,” there’s no chance of slowing down now.

"The Color of Life"
"The Color of Life" - Cheri Christensen. Quang Huang. Jennifer McChristian.Cheri Christensen. Quang Huang. Jennifer McChristian. Three artists will team up for a brilliant display of artwork that will showcase the use of vibrant color and the nuances of subtle changes in color to create a mood or emotion.
Cheri Christensen's joyful work is embodied in her bold paintings of animals. Painting in a Russian impressionistic style, Cheri's work uses her palette to exude happiness and a bit of whimsy.
Qiang Huang brings a classic technique to his still life compositions but creates his own unique voice with his use of color and mastery of light. A guest member of Richard Schmid's "Putney Painters", Qiang's paintings are a nod toward the fundamentals with an artistic flair that have made him a growing presence in the fine art world.
Jennifer McChristian depicts the scenes we encounter on a daily basis. Jennifer has the ability to use her brush to accent specific elements of a scene to draw the viewer into the painting and see the beauty that is right in front of us. Winner of numerous recent awards, Jennifer's work evokes a sense of wonder and humility.
InSight Gallery is pleased to host a show with three such young and talented artists that encourage us all to see the color of life.

“The Power of Form”
Presenting the fine art of Dan Beck, Kevin Beilfuss, Lindsey Bittner Graham, John Austin Hanna, E Melinda Morrison and Hodges Soileau

Our most ancient expression of beauty was classically in the human form, powerfully evoking the gods, connecting us from form to the formless, from the mundane to the ethereal.
The work of our highly collectible, nationally and internationally recognized artists Dan Beck, Kevin Beilfuss, Lindsey Bittner Graham, John Austin Hanna, E Melinda Morrison and Hodges Soileau underscore the power of the individual, evocatively speaking to us still in the diversity of human form, in the subtlety of expression and nuance of experience. Come see the diversity of talent that speaks so clearly in the human form. From clearly impressionistic to classically realistic and all shading in-between.... Show runs May 4th through 28th. GARRISON BROTHERS DISTILLERY - HYE, TEXAS

Garrison Brothers Distillery™ is a small distilled spirits plant located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. We manufacture Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey™ from our kitchen, still-house and barrel barns in Hye, Texas.
JUST A SCENIC DRIVE AWAY!

The “Sit and Sip” Tour is a guided walk of the ranch-distillery with detailed information about the bourbon whiskey industry and the history of Garrison Brothers. You’ll visit the kitchen, smell the sweet corn cooking, taste our distiller’s beer, and nose fermenting sweet mash. Our cooks will explain the process from “corn to cork.”

You’ll also tour the legendary Garrison Brothers stillhouse and sample fresh-flowing 135-proof “white dog”, right from the stills. We’ll visit the barreling barn and you’ll sign your own barrel. If we’re barreling the day you’re there, we’ll allow you the honor of hammering in a bung. Our distillers will explain how the stills operate and what it is we do that makes Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey
such an extraordinary bourbon.

Finally, we’ll walk you through our showcase barrel barn and pour you a small sample of our limited release Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the 2008 Small Batch Vintage, in our saloon and gift shop. Here, our hospitality manager will give a detailed explanation of the importance of barrel maturation in making fine bourbon whiskey. This tour takes about an hour and a half.

Texas Hill Country #1
on The New York Times
31 Places to Go This Summer

"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. "
