Meusebach’s birth. This year’s program, "Pioneering the Grape and Other Flora in the Hill Country: Yesterday and Today", honors Meusebach and his contemporaries and their interest in grape cultivation and wine production in the Texas Hill Country. This program links past and present interests in the grape and the vision of its role in the future of the region. Throughout the day, Dr. James Kearney, Lonnie Childs, Dr. Ed Hellman, Bill Lindemann, Penny Adams, and Bill Blackmon will share their insights on how 19th century, settlers documented the native flora and shared horticultural information to help lay the foundation for today’s vibrant viticulture in the Texas Hill Country. This program is a unique opportunity to hear well-recognized speakers share their perspectives of the early settlers’ interests in native flora and future of vintner’s art in the Texas Hill Country. It is a full day with six presenters: three in the morning session designed to inform and excite listeners about the origins of the regions native flora and the future of viticulture in the Hill Country. The afternoon session offers subscribers an option to participate in one of two Field Trips: Trip #1., an onsite visit to Granite Hill Vineyard for a discussion on the production of grapes in the Hill Country or Trip # 2., a pre-determined driving route with stops along the way to view and discuss the native wildflowers and environment of Gillespie County. Both morning and afternoon sessions are sure to be engaging experiences for all who attend and share a growing interest in the horticulture of the grape and native plants: their past and future role in Texas Hill Country. Employing landing craft, tanks, explosive charges and flame thrower, the Pacific Combat Living History programs explain and illustrate the equipment, weapons and tactics American Army and Marine and Imperial Japanese Army forces employed in the deadly struggles on islands like Tarawa, Peleliu, Saipan and Iwo Jima. Admission to these 90-minute programs is $7.50 for adults and $5.00 for students. Children under 6 are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the George H. W. Bush Gallery or the Admiral Nimitz Museum. Walk-up tickets are normally available at the Pacific Combat Zone prior to the program; however, these shows are subject to sell-outs. Earplugs are provided. This popular Living History program uses objects from the museum's education collection to bring World War II to life for visitors as re-enactors demonstrate the weapons and discuss the tactics and strategy that won the war. The work of our highly collectible, nationally and internationally recognized artists Dan Beck, Kevin Beilfuss, Lindsey Bittner Graham, John Austin Hanna, E Melinda Morrison and Hodges Soileau underscore the power of the individual, evocatively speaking to us still in the diversity of human form, in the subtlety of expression and nuance of experience. Come see the diversity of talent that speaks so clearly in the human form. From clearly impressionistic to classically realistic and all shading in-between.... Show runs May 4th through 28th. on The New York Times 31 Places to Go This Summer
"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. " #1 on Away.com's Top 10
