Dale Watson is an American alternative country/Texas Country singer, guitarist, songwriter, and self-published author based in Austin, Texas. A staunch adherent of old-style honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dale Watson has positioned himself as a tattooed, stubbornly independent outsider only interested in recording authentic country music. He decided that Texas was the natural habitat for his brand of music, and he quickly won a popular following, along with a record deal with Hightone Records, after moving to Austin in the mid-‘90s. His 1995 debut album, Cheatin’ Heart Attack, and its “Nashville Rash” anthem spread his renown across the Atlantic, with Europe remaining a popular stronghold for Watson.

His musical roots and values remain very much in evidence throughout Carryin’ On, but the maturity of the material, the ambition of the arrangements and the subtlety of his vocal performances distinguish the album from so much of Watson’s earlier work. The title song sets the tone, with its reflective ruminations on the morning after a long night’s partying: “Crashin’ into 40, might better think about growin’ up,” he sings “You got a wife and kid that lean on you/ Brother are you strong enough?” By the end of the song, it’s plain that the singer is looking in the mirror.

“Ain’t That Livin’” offers the flip side of that theme, a companion piece that celebrates the enduring pleasures of domestic contentment over a night’s excitement. “You’re Always on My Mind” channels vintage George Jones, while the cantina balladry of “For a Little While” sounds like a Marty Robbins classic. On “Heart of Stone,” Watson offers the most nuanced vocal performance of his career. It’s the sound of a man in full command of his artistry and one who has found peace with himself. Even the hardcore drinking song, “Tequila, Whiskey and Beer, Oh My!” has a playfulness to it, as Dale hails the bartender as “the Wizard of Booze.”

“I let go of the angry young man a good while back,” he says. “When you try to fight something, it’s more of a struggle. I’ve just learned to do what I do. The people that appreciate what we do are out there and multiplying. It’s just gotten bigger and better when I’m spending less time attacking what I don’t like and more embracing what I love.”

Water Forum: The State of Our Water Today and Tomorrow
Magical hidden springs, crystal-clear swimming holes, peacefully wandering creeks, and clear, swiftly flowing rivers are what give the Texas Hill Country its very special character!
Taking care of the region’s water supply is a complex challenge. Unfortunately many believe our rivers and aquifers are already over-allocated. It is time for a very conservative approach to planning and a new way of thinking about water use. Conservation is key!
Hill Country Alliance, the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fredericksburg will present "The State of Our Water Today and Tomorrow" from 6-8 pm at the Hill Country University Center, located at 2818 E. Highway 290.

The speaker panel includes State Representative Doug Miller, Andrew Sansom, Executive Director of the Meadows Center for Water and Environment at Texas State University, Raymond M. Slade, Jr., a former hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, Joe Beal, former General Manager of the Lower Colorado River Authority and Paul Tybor, Manager of the Hill Country Underground Water Conservation District. The forum is free and open to anyone who would like to attend.

Behind the scary water headlines - Mary E. Kelly Austin American Statesman
"It’s hard to look at any media in Texas today without being confronted by a dire outlook on the state’s water future. The jarring effects of a deep drought and the steep price tag attached to the state’s water plan definitely make for attention-grabbing copy. But for those who care about sustainable management of our limited water resources, property rights and fiscal discipline in the state budget, it’s worth a look behind those headlines." Trail Project Day at Enchanted Rock
TRAIL PROJECT DAYS

JOIN US for one of our TRAIL BUILDING PROJECTS at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. The projects focus on the severely eroded and impacted trails at the park. Come out and help us rebuild and restore these areas.
The work is strenuous and rewarding. Volunteers may be expected to:
1) Load and haul rock, gravel and sand.
2) Work with hand tools (shovels, hoes, etc)
3) Construct steps, retaining walls, water breaks and check dams.
WHAT TO DO
Meet at the GAZEBO at the start of the Summit Trail at 9:00 am on the designated work day. A crew chief will be present to log you in at that time. The volunteers generally work from 9:00 am to 4:00pm, HOWEVER, you can volunteer as little as 4 hours of your time to receive free camping. If you would like to participate with less volunteer time than 4 hours, please feel free to do so, but do not expect to camp for free at the park. Entrance to the park and camping are provided free of charge to all volunteers. Please identify yourself at the park headquarters as a "Trail Project Volunteer" and you will receive directions from the park staff about camping facilities. Volunteers can expect to get in the park with no entry fee on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Camping is available on Friday and Saturday nights only. The trail building work days are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month. No advance registration is required. Please email Barry for details or to let him know about a large group. The work crew tour groups all meet at 9am at the gazebo.
WHAT TO BRING
To have a better volunteer experience and protect yourself from the elements, each individual should bring the following items:

sturdy footwear (like hiking boots)
work gloves for your hands
sack lunch and water
hat and sunscreen

The Friends of Enchanted Rock will provide all necessary hand tools and equipment to perform the volunteer work, plus a portable radio and first aid kit for emergencies.

Fredericksburg Music Club Presents 2011 Grammy Nominee, Ava Pine, Vocalist
Praised by audiences and critics alike for her “sheer vocal beauty, ease and eloquence” and “rewarding musicianship,” excels in music ranging from Baroque to Contemporary. She draws from a rich well of experience in both classical music and the theatrical stage, which she uses to maximum effect to communicate with her audiences, whether singing opera, oratorio, or giving ...a recital. In her role debut as Pamina with Florentine Opera, she was praised as the production’s “vocal queen … who sang and acted Pamina with heartbreaking, honeyed sweetness. Her big voice reads as beautiful not only because of its richness, but because she conceals all effort and gets the meaning of the word legato.”

Bringing the very BEST from today's CLASSICAL MUSIC world to Fredericksburg, TX. The Fredericksburg Music Club was founded by Mrs. William Dietel in 1937, to advance the study and interest in classical music in the Frederickburg community. Today the Fredericksburg Music Club enjoys an international reputation. Visit their website for a complete schedule. You will be delighted by the impressive lineup of Classical Musicians! Crossroads Saloon Presents The Derailers
Welcome To Crossroads Saloon and Steakhouse - Great Food and Great Live Music!
Crossroads offers the BEST! It's a GREAT spot to get your groove-on while you’re in Fredericksburg, Texas. We're open late, featuring live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Offering one of the best wine lists you'll find in Fredericksburg, TX, cold beer on tap, both imported and domestic, and a full bar of high end liquors, you can be sure that you’ll find a good time at Crossroads Saloon and Steakhouse.

TONIGHT! The Derailers! Put on your Dancin’ Shoes and get ready for a Boot Scoot!

In a career that has given rise to more than a decade’s worth of fine-tuned, highly anticipated and wonderfully received music, the Derailers continue to build the relationship between song, listener and dance floor.

Each album has been a mix of well-crafted original songs and cover songs so thoughtfully chosen and so representative of the band, fans think they are as original as the band themselves. Challenged by their fans to create a sound that mirrors the shuffle of happy boots on a hardwood floor, the Derailers have fed the hungry dancehall crowds with their classic country beats and a 60s pop sensibility. Fans continue to show their appreciation and admiration with requests for encores long after the last drink has been served.

The Cailloux Theater Presents Russian Folk Festival
With its combination of traditional balalaika musicians, Russian folk dancers, and the booming Baritone voice of Nikolai Massenkoff, the Russian Folk Festival is a riot of traditional colors, sounds and textures to dazzle all senses.

Massenkoff has appeared in more than 40 states and 12 countries, including recent tours of Russia, China and the Phillipines; has performed at the Olympic Games, in Carnegie Hall and Epcot Center; has shared the stage with the likes of Bob Hope, Julio Eglesias, Tony Bennett and Liberace; and has received awards including the Laureate of the First International Song Festival.

Even with all this, perhaps the most persuasive recommendation for the Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival is the sheer volume of praise heaped upon their performances by presenters, fellow artists, and audiences: “a thrilling performance,” “unforgettable,” “an absolutely delightful evening.”

You’re sure to enjoy this high-spirited celebration of Russian heritage! The Russian Folk Festival will be presented Sunday, February 3 at 3 p.m.

Texas Hill Country #1
on The New York Times
31 Places to Go This Summer

"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. "

Shermans Travel
5 Eco-Friendly Wineries

Pedernales Cellars, Texas

Composting, recycling, and natural pest management is just the starting point for Pedernales Cellars. By building underground, this Texas Hill Country winery takes advantage of the area’s natural limestone to provide a cool and steady environment for case storage, slashing the facility’s energy consumption in half. Removal of invasive plant species and cedar overgrowth from the property has also led to the reemergence of previously lost seeps and springs. An added bonus? The tasting room features local and sustainable products like Bella Vista Ranch’s olive oils and t-shirts made from renewable bamboo fibers.
