Texas Hill Country
#1 on The New York Times
"31 Places to Go This Summer"
"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. " - The New York Times, Sunday, June 1, 2008

Directions to Luckenbach Texas from Freddericksburg:
On US Hwy 290 (Main St.) go approximately 6 miles East towards Austin. Turn right onto RR1376 (KOA Kampgrounds and Shell Gas Station). Go 4.6 miles and take a right on Luckenbach Town Loop just before the South Grape Creek Bridge.

HELPFUL HINTS: Off of RR 1376 DO NOT turn right on the "Luckenbach-Cain City" Road! You will pass the large Feed Mill (Behrends Feed/"Uptown" Luckenbach) on your left. The next two rights after you pass Grapetown Road will be Luckenbach Town Loop. If you cross the South Grape Creek bridge you've just passed Luckenbach. WATCH FOR DEER!

Enjoy a cold beer, local Texas music, and lots of good old fashioned fun. Musicians gather for acoustic jam sessions under huge oak trees during summer months or inside by the pot belly stove on cold winter days. No doubt about it, the music is the magic of Luckenbach. The historic dance hall regularly hosts the very best of live boot-scooting Texas music.

History of Luckenbach
A Texas State of Mind
These days Luckenbach Texas is, to paraphrase John Steinbeck, a state of mind - A Texas state of mind, where you can kick back, relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life - like a step back in time. This tiny hill country hamlet where "Everybody's Somebody" was established as a Trading Post in 1849 making it one of the oldest settlements in Gillespie County. "A Texas State of Mind"! Jacob Luckenbach is known to have come to Texas as early as the mid-1830's and was among the Texans, including many Texas-Germans, who helped to win Texas' independence from Mexico. The Bounty and Donation Land Grants of Texas 1835-1888, show that he was awarded payment for service in the Texas army from May to September 15, 1836. The general store has been in existence since 1849. 150 Years of Luckenbach... in Texas!

The Luckenbach Bar
"If you're drinking to forget, please pay in advance."
"The Luckenbach Bar has more soul per square inch than any other, anywhere!" In the center of the cozy bar is a wood-burning iron stove that heats up deer sausage in the winter and is a nest for mama chickens in the spring.
* Taxidermied deer heads from the '20's are so moth-eaten they appear to smile.
A chair placed in the ceiling with a sign, "Reserved for Benny" awaiting the return of a loyal patron who passed away. At The Luckenbach Bar, we like to philosophize, drink longnecks, play dominos, and tell stories in the bar. Most everyday you'll find singer/songwriters from near and afar playing their latest compositions. On weekends, crowds gather out under the huge live oaks to listen to the jam sessions. Come on by and enjoy a longneck, listen to the music and tell a story or two at the Luckenbach Bar.
