Texas Hill Country
#1 on The New York Times
"31 Places to Go This Summer"
"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. " - The New York Times, Sunday, June 1, 2008

Old Tunnel WMA - 11 miles south of Fredericksburg off of Old San Antonio Rd.
10619 Old San Antonio Rd.  Fredericksburg, Texas 78624
Open year-round from sunrise to sunset for general use.
Bat viewing nightly May-October. The trail to the lower viewing area is closed each evening. Monday through Wednesday evenings the trail and lower viewing area are not open to the public. On Thursday through Sunday evenings, the trail will only be open to those visitors who pay admission to view the bats at the lower viewing area.
For the most up-to-date emergence information, call the toll-free information line at 1.866.978.2287.
Old Tunnel WMA was acquired by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1991. The primary goals of the WMA are to implement sound resource management practices and research investigations to insure the long-term stability of the bat colony, while providing for maximum public outreach opportunities. Research has been conducted at Old Tunnel WMA since the property was purchased by TPWD, and results of these research projects have allowed biologists to make sound management decisions. Bat-viewing opportunities exist seven nights a week and educational presentations are given Thursday through Sunday, May to October.(When visiting Old Tunnel, we recommend bringing a pair of binoculars to get the best view of the bat emergence.)
The nature trail at Old Tunnel WMA is open year-round. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, bird watching, and general wildlife-viewing. Several educational exhibits with information on bats and railroad history are located along the half mile trail and from May to October bats can usually be seen flying within the tunnel from the trail.

In his live show he fingerpicks his 1972 Martin D-35 with a unique style and deftness that comes from years of honing his craft. He gives the listener a show they come away from with a smile, sharing stories he paints of real people making it in the real world.
George Ensle is a painter of songs. Sometimes he uses broad strokes to paint hilltop sunsets, tree lined rivers, and mountain ranges, and sometimes he paints with fine strokes the portraits of everyday people, the unsung heroes he captures in song.

Performing his whole life and in many different places. This Gypsy Outlaw, All Around done everything Man is a Country Music Encyclopedia and first class performer. Florida, Alaska, California and everywhere in-between; the internet has been instrumental in connecting Bo Porter fans across the globe. With a music career already spanning decades Bo has made a lot of fans along the way
With genuine musical heritage and steeped in classic country traditions Bo has found a permanent place here in Austin, TX. An authentic style all his own Bo sets a vocal standard we haven't seen in years.
After arriving in town late January 2007 Bo began booking himself as a solo act around the Lake Travis area, but it wasn’t long before he had landed a gig for a Trio consisting of a stand up bass / rhythm guitar & vocals / electric guitar. Hi's strong baritone voice has compared with Marty Robbins, Faron Young, Merle Haggard, & even Johnny Cash.
With a regular gig at one of Austins Premier Clubs (The Saxon Pub) Bo is steadily working his way through Texas and helping him along are his Regular Monthly sponsors and Sponsors, like Budweiser/Browns Dist.
Bo's unique take on music deranges traditional hits and makes them his own. A little Classic Country, a bit of Blues, some Rock n’ Roll, and a lot of heart and soul is what Bo Porter delivers. Bo includes the audience in his performances, which keeps them coming back. His comedic sensibility, and audience communication endears him to the audiences as well as the club owners. The Bo Porter show is a must see.

Lower South Grape Creek School
10273 East US Highway 290  Fredericksburg, Texas 78624
Lower South Grape Creek School - Built in 1901. Consolidated in 1960. On holidays, such as Washington's Birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, students presented programs. All parts were memorized and families and the community were invited. Christmas plays were held inside this school with the front area having a curtain, and the students using a side window for the entrance and exit. Santa Claus handed out oranges, apples, and candy, and lit the candles on the Christmas tree. One year his beard caught on fire. He quickly exited through the window and headed for the well.

Join the Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools Trail for their open house at the Lower South Grape Creek School. The Trail allows visitors to learn about the education and customs of the 19th century residents of German heritage in the Hill Country. Each month a different rural county school will host an open house and tour. Color coded maps of the trail are available at the Visitor Center at 302 E. Austin Street.

Hondo's on Main
312 W. Main  Fredericksburg, Texas 78624
Enjoy great music and a great selection of gourmet Texas cuisine at Hondo's on Main! Tonight The Mckay Brothers!
Darryl Smyers, from the Dallas Observer wrote about the McKays:
"It's always a good sign when guys who use "brothers" in their name are actually brothers. Noel and Hollin McKay are fifth-generation Texans who revel in the best things the state has to offer: food, a frosty beverage and an honest twang. Their impressive sophomore effort, Cold Beer and Hot Tamales, was produced by Lloyd Maines and features a couple of bilingual efforts that understand the emotions and history behind a song such as Butch Hancock's "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me." Never straying too far from their iconic influences (Willie, Guy Clark and Robert Earle Keen), The McKay Brothers are still capable of producing songs of heartfelt reflection ("Warmer Place to Sleep") as well as an apolitical protest number about the surburbanization of the Hill Country (the poignant "Disappearing Texas"). Noel and Hollin make music that celebrates Texas without succumbing to dimwitted clichés or pandering to the lowest hayseed denominator like so many slick, Nashville hustlers who erroneously claim a link to authentic country music".
