Bat viewing nightly May-October. The trail to the lower viewing area is closed each evening. Monday through Wednesday evenings the trail and lower viewing area are not open to the public. On Thursday through Sunday evenings, the trail will only be open to those visitors who pay admission to view the bats at the lower viewing area.

Old Tunnel WMA was acquired by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1991. The primary goals of the WMA are to implement sound resource management practices and research investigations to insure the long-term stability of the bat colony, while providing for maximum public outreach opportunities. Research has been conducted at Old Tunnel WMA since the property was purchased by TPWD, and results of these research projects have allowed biologists to make sound management decisions. Bat-viewing opportunities exist seven nights a week and educational presentations are given Thursday through Sunday, May to October.(When visiting Old Tunnel, we recommend bringing a pair of binoculars to get the best view of the bat emergence.)
The nature trail at Old Tunnel WMA is open year-round. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, bird watching, and general wildlife-viewing. Several educational exhibits with information on bats and railroad history are located along the half mile trail and from May to October bats can usually be seen flying within the tunnel from the trail.

In his live show he fingerpicks his 1972 Martin D-35 with a unique style and deftness that comes from years of honing his craft. He gives the listener a show they come away from with a smile, sharing stories he paints of real people making it in the real world.
George Ensle is a painter of songs. Sometimes he uses broad strokes to paint hilltop sunsets, tree lined rivers, and mountain ranges, and sometimes he paints with fine strokes the portraits of everyday people, the unsung heroes he captures in song.

You're welcome anytime, but there are five special self guided Trail Events planned throughout the year to enhance your Texas Hill Country Winery experience. In anticipation, wineries will host tastings of newly released wines, and wine and food pairings, seminars, demonstrations and tours. Come and meet the vintners as you tour and taste. Enjoy the Hill Country artists, musicians, craftsmen, chefs and entertainers of all kinds featured at the wineries during the Trail Events.

All the trails are self-guided driving tours to be enjoyed at your leisure. Some wineries charge to taste during ticketed and non-ticketed events. Consult the Winery Info page, or the individual winery websites, for charges.

Texas Traditions Show with Fresco Fine Art Publications

100 new works by the finest artists in Texas will be shown at InSight Gallery in cooperation with Fresco Fine Art Publications. InSight Gallery is pleased to have been chosen to host the Texas Traditions Show and Sale. The artists haveb been chosen by fine art curator, Michael Duty to be a part of a book publication detailing the works of the most acclaimed and talented Texas-based artists.

ADMISSION: Festival admission is $6.00 per adult. Children ages 6 to 12 are $1 per child and under age 6 are admitted free. Two-day passes are $10 per person and three-day passes are $15 per person. ADVANCE TICKET SALES: A gate will be open at Marktplatz beginning at noon on Friday for advance ticket sales only.

FOOD and DRINK: Food and drinks are sold on the grounds. Visitors are prohibited from bringing ice chests, beer or wine onto the festival grounds or from leaving with beer or wine.

Since its founding in 1981, Oktoberfest has supported a variety of art programs in the area. All work is done by community volunteers and proceeds support projects sponsored by the non-profit Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance

A tradition in Fredericksburg is the FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK FREDERICKSBURG, with galleries open until 8:00pm. Fredericksburg's art galleries will be focusing on some aspect of exhibiting artists' works, which may include painting and fine craft demonstrations, casual art talks, opportunities to meet artists, special showings and entertainment. Participants will experience the Fredericksburg art scene up close and personal while enjoying fine wines from local wineries and beyond all day long. Participating galleries are Artisans at Rocky Hill, Charles Beckendorf Gallery, Fredericksburg Art Gallery, The Good Art Co., Photography 414, Rodeo Studio Gallery, Uptown Market, Whistle Pik Galleries, Fredericksburg Art Guild and InSight Gallery.

Living History Program
This popular living history program uses objects from the museum`s education collection to bring World War II to life for visitors as re-enactors demonstrate the weapons and discuss the tactics and strategy that won the war. The Pacific Combat Zone is located two blocks northeast of the museum complex on E. Austin Street between Elk and Lee.
Three programs each day: 10:30 am, 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm

A non-competitive walking event for the entire family, with dogs on leashes welcome. As you walk the country roads, see the Texas White House, the cemetery where the Johnsons are buried and other sites on the Ranch. Registration is from 8:00am - noon and you must be finished by 3:00pm. This event is free, unless you are seeking volkssport's credits, then the cost is $3.

Lower South Grape Creek School - Built in 1901. Consolidated in 1960. On holidays, such as Washington's Birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, students presented programs. All parts were memorized and families and the community were invited. Christmas plays were held inside this school with the front area having a curtain, and the students using a side window for the entrance and exit. Santa Claus handed out oranges, apples, and candy, and lit the candles on the Christmas tree. One year his beard caught on fire. He quickly exited through the window and headed for the well.

Join the Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools Trail for their open house at the Lower South Grape Creek School. The Trail allows visitors to learn about the education and customs of the 19th century residents of German heritage in the Hill Country. Each month a different rural county school will host an open house and tour. Color coded maps of the trail are available at the Visitor Center at 302 E. Austin Street.

Their impressive sophomore effort, Cold Beer and Hot Tamales, was produced by Lloyd Maines and features a couple of bilingual efforts that understand the emotions and history behind a song such as Butch Hancock's "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me." Never straying too far from their iconic influences (Willie, Guy Clark and Robert Earle Keen), The McKay Brothers are still capable of producing songs of heartfelt reflection ("Warmer Place to Sleep") as well as an apolitical protest number about the surburbanization of the Hill Country (the poignant "Disappearing Texas").
