Willow City Loop

Just outside of Fredericksburg heading toward Llano, Texas, the terrain changes from pastoral, gently rolling hills to a dramatic, rugged landscape of deep canyons, sky reaching jagged cliffs, meandering streams and phenomenal panoramic views. All year round you'll be amazed by this spectacular countryside, BUT during a good Wildflower Season (March - May), you'll discover "take-your-breath-away" inspirational natural beauty. A favorite location for a slow, lingering country drive is the "famous" Willow City Loop! This is THE iconic Texas Hill Country scenic drive! The private two-lane Ranch Road winds for 13 miles through some of the oldest and most unique geology in central Texas... through canyons carved by picturesque Coal Creek, and over hill tops where the views are stunning. In wildflower season the hillsides and low lying meadows are ablaze with the colors of a multitude of wildflower varieties... Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, Phlox, Coreopsis, Mexican Poppies, Sunflowers, Firewheels, yellow and white Daisies, Winecups, Horsemint, and Verbena! Mesquite, pecan, and live oak trees thrive, and there is an abundance of wildlife... the most beautiful Texas Hill Country you will ever experience!

All land along the Loop is privately owned. Residents of Willow City ask only that you keep moving along the narrow roadway, so they can access their driveways, and PLEASE, do not park your car on, or walk through the wildflower fields.

Directions:

Take SR 16 (Llano Street), 13.3 miles NE, to RR 1323, and turn right. Continue East for 2.79 miles to Willow City. Turn left on Willow City Loop. The road loops back to SR 16 where you can turn left and return to Fredericksburg, or for a head-turning view of Enchanted Rock, turn right and continue to 965. Turn left on to 965... you can't miss the BIG pink rock! Wow! Wonders of the world! You just never know what might crop up on the backroads of Texas! Enjoy!

The Knot in the Loop Saloon

The Knot in the Loop Saloon is a good bar for a cold brew near Willow City, Texas, and the INCREDIBLE Willow City Loop!

Located in Eckert, Texas, Knot in the Loop is not on the Famous Willow City Loop, but if you're coming from Fredericksburg you'll drive right by it. They've been serving up cold beer, wine, burgers, great music and fun in the Heart of the Texas Hill Country since August 2, 2002.

It's part Saloon and part Wild West Museum with a BIG TEXAS WELCOME from the friendly staff who will make you feel right at home. Wander around, check out the walls, the rafters, toss a dollar on the ceiling...

Open Wednesday - Sunday, noon til midnight (sometimes earlier) Call before you drive! 830.685.3591

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch . . . to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived... this IS true success!

Texas Hill Country #1
on The New York Times
31 Places to Go This Summer

"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. "
