(HORSESHOE BAY, Texas) – More than 20 hot-air balloons from across America will converge at the second annual Balloons over Horseshoe Bay Resort on Easter weekend, April 18-20, at the AAA four-diamond Horseshoe Bay Resort. This year’s festival will feature new activities including: historic war plane flyovers, powered parachutes and award-winning live music.

Two special shaped balloons highlight this year’s balloon entries. Spunky the Flying Skunk and The Purple People Eater are two balloons sure to grab the crowd’s attention. Like last year, balloon glows will be held on both Friday and Saturday evenings of the festival.

Friday’s opening night festivities (open to resort overnight VIP package guests only) will include tethered hot-air balloon rides for all attendees, live music by Sauce the Band, and a BBQ dinner buffet.

Saturday’s festivities (open to the public) starts with a balloon ascension scheduled for 7:00 a.m. Powered parachute demonstrations and a WWII historic aircraft flyover highlight a busy Saturday morning schedule. Alamo Helicopters will provide helicopter rides throughout the day with wine tastings and an antique car show rounding out the day’s activities at the Horseshoe Bay Resort Jet Center.

Saturday evening will include skydivers, the Balloon glow grand finale and a concert by Austin’s own Reckless Kelly.

Tickets for Saturday’s festivities are $20 per adult. Children 12 and under are admitted free with parent (limit two children per accompanying parent). Public parking will be available at Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Summit Rock Golf Club with complimentary shuttles running to and from the festival entrance starting on Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m.

On Sunday, the festival will conclude with private balloon rides in the morning and a Gospel Brunch featuring Pamela Hart, live in concert, at the Palm D’Or Pavilion at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Festival VIP Packages start at $399 per room and include accommodations and access to all three days of the festival, including Friday night’s dinner and Easter Sunday’s gospel brunch. To book your reservations call 877-258-4512 or visit balloonsoverhsbresort.com.

Public tickets are available for Saturday only and can be purchased online at balloonsoverhsbresort.com.

Becker Vineyards Presents Live Music on The Verandah with Ben Beckendorf
MUSIC on The Verandah with Ben Beckendorf, EATS by Smokin’ Willies Smoked Meats,
WINE and Ambiance by Becker Vineyards

Ben Beckendorf was born in Austin Texas in the 50s. Texas was already in the groove of the Blues - with the likes of T-Bone Walker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Freddie King, and many more. Little did they know another bluesman had been born. His family moved to California for a while, then back to Texas, and eventually located in central Texas on a ranch just North of Fredericksburg. "The nearest neighbors we had were miles away, so my guitar became my best friend. I would spend hours a day listening to records and trying to figure out patterns on the guitar." Ever since he knew what a guitar was, Ben wanted one, and in 1964 Ben picked up his first guitar (it was a Gene Autry guitar that used to be his father's that he found in his Grandmother's attic) and never put it down. In 1965 Ben bought his first electric guitar (a used 1949 Kay electric guitar - which he still has). He learned all kinds of music - He liked the Blues, Jazz, Rock, Folk,Country & Pop. He listened to his music heroes with a yearning ear. Unlike a lot of his friends, Ben liked to listen to Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Otis Rush, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and many other Blues icons. " I was always fascinated by the way the old blues players would put their heart and soul into their music." Come and join us for this Hill Country Blues Man!

John Bennett named 2010 Texas State Artist, 3D

AUSTIN, Texas – May 26, 2009 – The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) has announced its appointment of sculptor John Bennett of Fredericksburg, for Texas State Three-Dimensional Artist, 2010 . This position, as well as state poet laureate, state musician (Willie Nelson- 2009), and state two-dimensional artist, was created by SB 1043 of the 77th Legislature, and will be filled by one-year appointments. Bennett and the other appointees named for 2009 and 2010 were selected for the exceptional quality of their work and for their outstanding commitment to the arts in Texas.

“State artists demonstrate the essence of what art in Texas is all about,” Rep. Mark Homer, chair of the House of Representative's Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism said. “The work of these artists, and others like them, ensures that art and culture thrives in our great state, and we are pleased to honor these talented men and women with this recognition.”

Nominees must be native Texans or have resided in the state for at least five years. They must have attained the highest levels of excellence and success in their respective disciplines and have received critical reviews in state, regional or national publications. Visual artist nominees must work in two- or three-dimensional art mediums, must have participated in at least one one-person show, and must have an extensive history of exhibiting in recognized museums and galleries.

TCA reviewed all nominations and developed a list of finalists for submission to the Texas Poet Laureate, State Musician and State Artist Committee. The committee, composed of members appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, made the final selections.

“Texas is home to so many talented artists, and this diverse group exemplifies the best of the best,” said Texas Commission on the Arts Executive Director Dr. Gary Gibbs. “This honor rewards these talented Texans for their outstanding artistic achievements, and we are proud to have them represent the state.”

Bennett and the other State Artists went to the Capitol in Austin on May 28th to be presented to the Texas Legislature and hear the reading of the joint resolutions honoring them in the Chambers of the Texas Senate and House of Representatives. They were then introduced and greeted by the legislators.

John Bennett, a fourth generation Texan, creates figures inspired by the men and women of the Golden West. Bronco busters, wild west show performers, and Hollywood heroes stir up vivid images for him to portray in bronze sculpture. Bennett’s exhibits include the Chisholm Trail Museum- Duncan, OK; Sculpture in the Park- Loveland, CO; Phippen Museum Western Art Show- Prescott, AZ, DeLand Museum of Fine Art- DeLand, FL- Bosque Conservatory in Clifton, Museum of Western Art in Kerrville; and the Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth.

In 1999 his sculpture was selected to represent the Women’s Museum in Dallas for display in the White House . In 2001 he won Best of Show for Professionals at the State Fair of Texas, and in 2006 was awarded the Key to the City in Leesburg, Florida for a lifesize bronze of Annie Oakley and her dog Dave.

Texas Hill Country #1
on The New York Times
31 Places to Go This Summer

"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. "
