EXPLORE! About FredericksburgFredericksburg, Texas, was founded May 8, 1846 by Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach, new Commissioner General of the "Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas", also known as the "Noblemen's Society" or Mainzer Adelsverein. The town of Fredericksburg, Texas was named in honor of Prince Frederick of Prussia. Baron von Meusebach renounced his noble title and became known in Texas as John O. Meusebach. Fredericksburg is known as the home of "Texas German", a German dialect spoken by the first generations of settlers who did not learn English. The settlers of Fredericksburg, Texas, entered into a peace treaty with the Comanche Indians of the region. This treaty has been honored for over a century and a half, making it one of the few treaties with Native Americans that was never broken. Fredericksburg, Texas was an important part of the Pro-Union Texas resistance during the Civil War and it shares many cultural characteristics with New Braunfels, another German Texan town. Fredericksburg, Texas is also notable as the birthplace of Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Forces in World War II. The hotel owned by Nimitz's grandfather was converted into a museum, The National Museum of the Pacific War. It is the only institution in the continental United States dedicated to telling the story of the Pacific Theater battles of World War II. The museum is located on a six-acre site, and includes the George Bush Gallery, Admiral Nimitz Museum, Plaza of Presidents, Veterans' Walk of Honor, Japanese Garden of Peace, Pacific Combat Zone, and the Center for Pacific War Studies. The Japanese government gifted the Japanese Garden of Peace, a Zen Garden, to the museum as a tribute to the Nimitz Family. Experience live World War II enactments at the National Museum of the Pacific War. See our Calendar of Events for other special programs at the museum. Fredericksburg, TX is located in the central Texas Hill Country, just a short scenic drive north of San Antonio Texas, and just west of Austin, Texas. This delightful Texas Hill Country community has a strong reputation for historic preservation and warm small town charm. ![]() Wall Photos Today in Texas History - On this date 166 years ago, December 29, 1845, Texas (comprised of the present state of Texas and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming) was admitted as the 28th state of the Union. A state constitution, drawn up by the convention, was ratified by popular vote in October 1845 and accepted by the United States Congress on December 29, 1845, the date of Texas’s legal entry into the Union. The formal transfer of authority from the republic to the state was not made until a ceremony held on February 19, 1846. President Anson Jones handed over the reins of state government to Governor James Pinckney Henderson having declared “The final act in this great drama is now performed. The Republic of Texas is no more.”

"Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhauser. " #1 on Away.com's Top 10
