Let's do a little Texas two-step around the meaning of TERROIR. Traditionally terroir referred to the physical elements of place... soil, weather, climate, and how these elements combined from place to place to create different, recognizable characteristics in the wine produced in each locale. But I think there's a lot more to the story! So, here's our expanded definition. Hill Country Terroir is Territory + Texas ZEST! EVERYTHING that makes a PLACE, or vineyard special... the chemistry of the soil, the rain that falls and late freezes that nip. Wind and coons, birds and disease, HEAT! the people that tend the vines and their attitudes, the food, the MUSIC, the ground water... folk traditions, seasonal festivals... the DIRT... right up to the BIG BLUE SKY, and everything in between! So, join us on a journey to DISCOVER Texas Hill Country Terroir! Let the scenic back roads lead you on a treasure hunt for REAL TEXAS GOLD... the PEOPLE, the places, the wine and food! Experience take-your-breath-away Natural Beauty, Award-winning Wineries, Vineyards, and winemakers, exceptional Wine and Picnic Markets, Handcrafted Beer and Spirits, Olive Farms, Epicurean Cafes, Hill Country Bakeries, "DIVES to Die For", Farmer's Markets, Wine Tasting Rooms, Chef-Owned Restaurants, Gourmet Chocolates, Artisan Cheese, Live Music Venues and the GREAT OUTDOORS.... miles and miles of TEXAS! There's so much to do and see in historic Fredericksburg and the surrounding Texas Hill Country! Follow the journey as we DISCOVER the treasure!

French Wine Blight during the mid-19th century?
From 1880 to 1910, TV Munson of Denison, Texas traveled 50,000 miles in 40 states, classifying over 1,000 native American vines. When the Phylloxera aphid threatened to destroy Europes Wine industry, Munson collected 15 wagon loads of dormant native grape cuttings and shipped them to France to be used as rootstock... villages were saved and grape growers could once again grow grapes in Europe. Munson was awarded the Legion of Honor, Chevalier du Merite Agricole, by the French Government for his efforts.

Along rivers and streams, fencerows on backroads native TEXAS MUSTANG GRAPES are everywhere!. From 1880 to 1910, T. V. Munson of Denison, Texas traveled 50,000 miles in 40 states, classifying over 1,000 native vines. 15 wagons of dormant stem cuttings for shipment to France. Most importantly, all lots were identified by species and shipped via three ships to southern France. The vines were the breeding stock for the rootstocks which saved the European wine industry. Hundreds of villages were saved and thousands of grape growers were able to grow grapes again. The rootstocks used throughout the world today originated in Europe from the Texas native grape material from Munson. For this effort, T. V. Munson was awarded the Legion of Honor, Chevalier du Merite Agricole, by the French Government.

History and Heritage

Fredericksburg Tx was founded May 8, 1846 by Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach, new Commissioner General of the "Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas", also known as the "Noblemen's Society" or Mainzer Adelsverein. The town of Fredericksburg was named in honor of Prince Frederick of Prussia. Baron von Meusebach renounced his noble title and became known in Texas as John O. Meusebach. Fredericksburg is known as the home of "Texas German", a German dialect spoken by the first generations of settlers who did not learn English. The settlers entered into a peace treaty with the Comanche Indians of the region. This treaty has been honored for over a century and a half, making it one of the few treaties with Native Americans that was never broken. Fredericksburg Texas was an important part of the Pro-Union Texas resistance during the Civil War and it shares many cultural characteristics with New Braunfels, another German Texan town. Fredericksburg, Tx is also notable as the birthplace of Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Forces in World War II. The hotel owned by Nimitz's grandfather was converted into a museum, The National Museum of the Pacific War. It is the only institution in the continental United States dedicated to telling the story of the Pacific Theater battles of World War II. The museum is located on a six-acre site, and includes the George Bush Gallery, Admiral Nimitz Museum, Plaza of Presidents, Veterans' Walk of Honor, Japanese Garden of Peace, Pacific Combat Zone, and the Center for Pacific War Studies. The Japanese government gifted the Japanese Garden of Peace, a Zen Garden, to the museum as a tribute to the Nimitz Family.

Experience live World War II enactments at the National Museum of the Pacific War. See our Calendar of Events for other special programs at the museum.

Working Together

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

5 Eco Friendly Wineries

Pedernales Cellars, Texas Composting, recycling, and natural pest management is just the starting point for Pedernales Cellars. By building underground, this Texas Hill Country winery takes advantage of the area’s natural limestone to provide a cool and steady environment for case storage, slashing the facility’s energy consumption in half. Removal of invasive plant species and cedar overgrowth from the property has also led to the reemergence of previously lost seeps and springs. An added bonus? The tasting room features local and sustainable products like Bella Vista Ranch’s olive oils and t-shirts made from renewable bamboo fibers.
