The most famous story tells of how he secretly helped a poor man and his three daughters. Nikolaus was too modest to help in public, and wanted to save the man from any possible humiliation. Under the cover of night, Nikolaus climbed onto the roof and dropped three pieces of gold down the chimney. The story goes that the gold fell into three shoes which were upon the hearth. Another story says that the gold fell into stockings hung on the mantle to dry. In Germany, St. Nikolaus Day is celebrated on December 6th, Nikolaus' reputed birthday. Many children put a Nikolaus-Stiefel (Nikolaus boot) outside of the front door on the night of December 5th. St. Nikolaus fills the boot with sweets and gifts if the children were good and helpful all year.  Wall Photos Today in Texas History - On this date 166 years ago, December 29, 1845, Texas (comprised of the present state of Texas and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming) was admitted as the 28th state of the Union. A state constitution, drawn up by the convention, was ratified by popular vote in October 1845 and accepted by the United States Congress on December 29, 1845, the date of Texas’s legal entry into the Union. The formal transfer of authority from the republic to the state was not made until a ceremony held on February 19, 1846. President Anson Jones handed over the reins of state government to Governor James Pinckney Henderson having declared “The final act in this great drama is now performed. The Republic of Texas is no more.”
