Saint Nikolaus was a 4th century bishop who was known for his good deeds.  The most famous story tells of how he secretly helped a poor man and his three daughters.  Nikolaus was too modest to help in public, and wanted to save the man from any possible humiliation.  Under the cover of night, Nikolaus climbed onto the roof and dropped three pieces of gold down the chimney.  The story goes that the gold fell into three shoes which were upon the hearth.  Another story says that the gold fell into stockings hung on the mantle to dry. In Germany, St. Nikolaus Day is celebrated on December 6th, Nikolaus' reputed birthday.  Many children put a Nikolaus-Stiefel (Nikolaus boot) outside of the front door on the night of December 5th. St. Nikolaus fills the boot with sweets and gifts if the children were good and helpful all year.  If they were not, they will have a Rute (tree branch) instead!

Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork". - Fran Smith, Edutopia
