Located at the heart of Fredericksburg, Marktplatz divides the Historic Main Street Shopping District and the West Main Shopping District. The Vereins Kirche, an octagonally shaped building in the center of the park was the site of the first church and school in Fredericksburg. The original building was destroyed and a replica was built in its place. It’s lovely gardens and grounds are the perfect backdrop for many of Fredericksburg’s well known festivals, concerts, events, the Icebahn outdoor skating rink during the mid-winter holiday season and the Farmers Market in the warmer months. Marktplatz features many pavilions, picnic areas, gathering spaces, a canopied playground for children, a story-telling Maibaum or Maypole that displays the history of Fredericksburg along its branches, and the AMAZING GARDENS that seem to always be blooming with roses, crepe myrtles, lilies, and a multitude of other flowering plants. There are many historical bronze sculptures depicting historic figures and events important to Fredericksburg’s past and a working waterwheel. Pavilions can be reserved for private parties and events. Amenities include: Three large pavilions, a Large playground, green spaces, benches along the brick walkways and in tucked away corners of the gardens, and Public Restrooms. A GREAT place to rest after a morning of shopping, or to bring your children for a picnic in the park!
