TOAST A RISING STAR! TEXAS WINE

The wine growing regions of Texas include the area around Dallas in the northeast, the western plains and the Texas Hill Country. In all regions dedicated growers and vintners are cultivating and producing world class grapes and wines. The Texas wine industry is the fifth largest in the United States. Texas has been perfecting the art of growing grapes and making wine since the 1650’s when Franciscan priests began producing sacramental wines from native varieties. During the second half of the 19th century German immigrants to the Texas Hill Country discovered the mustang grape. The quality of the wine that they produced convinced others to plant vineyards and the Texas wine region was born. The golden age of Texas wine making ended with Prohibition and the modern Texas wine industry did not revitalize until the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Today there are six defined viticultural areas with 200 commercial vineyards and over 50 wineries producing more than 1.5 million gallons of wine each year. Today, Texas wine is winning national and international competitions and acclaim from wine connoisseurs and judges around the world. Texas varieties include cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc, cabernet franc, pinot noir, zinfandel, sangiovese, and viognier. The warm, sun drenched wine regions of Texas, with their alkaline soils, produce wines with the acidity and structure characteristic of French wines, balanced with a rich fruitiness reminiscent of California varieties.
