Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area

This is a very inspirational experience… to see the bats circle out of the tunnel in huge spirals up into the night sky just at sunset. The abandoned railroad tunnel that gives Old Tunnel its name is home to up to three million Brazilian free-tailed bats and 3,000 Cave bats from May to October. It is located out Old San Antonio Road about 20 minutes from Fredericksburg. Bat-viewing opportunities are available seven nights a week, and there are nightly educational programs Thursday through Sunday. Open year-round from sunrise to sunset for general use. Bat viewing nightly May – October. The trail to the lower viewing area is closed each evening. Call 866-978-2287 to get “emergence” time information.
